Cognitive Functions

These are the cognitive lenses through which INFPs see the world (according to theory) and which makes up their personality.

DOMINANT: Feeling, Introverted (Fi)

The INFPs preferred way of relating to things; evaluation of things based on how the INFP feels about them: a personal sense of like/dislike, right/wrong, good/bad, etc...

  • Personal feelings guide reactions, attitudes, choices. Feelings often take center stage; hard to ignore how they feel about things
  • Value authenticity – try to align words and actions with what feels right or good; aversive to people and things they perceive as fake or performative
  • Passionately attached to things which resonate with their feeling evaluation, whether people, causes, things
  • Strong empathy rooted in personal feelings; being able to understand how someone else feels based on thier own knowing of what it feels like

#4: Thinking, Extraverted (Te)

The INFPs least preferred function; a weakness and achilles heel.

#2: Intuition, Extraverted (Ne)

The INFPs preferred way of mentally interacting with the external world. Stays open to possibilities and is energized by what could be: generating new ideas, seeing different perspectives, exploring potential scenarios.

#3: Sensing, Introverted (Si)

The INFPs secondary introverted function. Focuses on what has been: prioritizes comfort and security in the familiar and the known; sticks to routines and habits.
